Bronchoscopy

What is a Bronchoscopy ?

Bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose lung or airway issues. By utilizing a bronchoscope, healthcare providers can visually inspect the windpipe and lungs, and even extract tissue samples for testing. This procedure enables providers to assess and, at times, address conditions affecting the lungs, trachea (windpipe), or throat. The bronchoscope, equipped with a light and camera, facilitates accurate diagnosis, evaluation, and potential treatment of respiratory conditions.

What does a bronchoscopy diagnose?

Bronchoscopy serves various diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:
  • Identifying lung disease or other factors contributing to symptoms such as persistent coughing, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath.
  • Monitoring and investigating findings following X-ray or CT scans indicating potential cancerous signs.
  • Assessing and addressing obstructions or constricted regions within the airways.
  • Identifying the origins of infections or inflammation within the lungs.
  • Collecting mucus or tissue samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Installing a stent (a small tube) to maintain airway patency.

How do I prepare for bronchoscopy?

Your healthcare team will provide detailed instructions on preparing for a bronchoscopy. In general, you will be required to fast for a specified period before the procedure and may need to discontinue certain medications, such as blood thinners or diabetes medication. Inform your provider about any medications, herbs, or vitamins you regularly take. You will receive a sedative for the procedure, so it’s important to arrange for transportation home afterward. Ensure someone is available to drive you home safely.
