Gastrointestinal

What Is Gastrointestinal ?

Gastrointestinal diseases encompass conditions that impact the entire digestive system, spanning from the mouth to the anus. They typically fall into two categories: functional and structural. Examples include colitis, food poisoning, lactose intolerance, and diarrhea. Conditions such as GERD, diarrhea, and colorectal cancer are also considered gastrointestinal diseases. While some disorders may not reveal any abnormalities upon examination of the GI tract, symptoms persist, while others exhibit both symptoms and visible irregularities.

What are functional gastrointestinal diseases?

Functional gastrointestinal diseases are characterized by a seemingly normal appearance of the GI tract upon examination, yet they exhibit impaired movement. These conditions are among the most prevalent issues affecting the GI tract, including the colon and rectum. Common examples encompass constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Various factors can disrupt the motility of your GI tract, such as:

  1. Consuming a diet lacking in fiber.
  2. Inadequate physical activity.
  3. Changes in routine, like traveling.
  4. Consumption of large quantities of dairy products.
  5. Stress.
  6. Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement, potentially due to hemorrhoids.
  7. Excessive use of anti-diarrheal medications, which can weaken bowel muscle movements (motility) over time.
  8. Utilization of antacid medications containing calcium or aluminum.
  9. Ingestion of certain medications, particularly antidepressants, iron supplements, and potent pain relievers like narcotics.
  10. Pregnancy.
