Stress Test

What is a Stress Test ?

Stress tests are designed to assess the efficiency of your heart under intense exertion. By pushing your heart to its limits, certain heart conditions become more detectable. These tests involve exercising on a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Alternatively, if you’re unable to exercise, medication can simulate the effects of physical exertion on your heart. There are various types of stress tests, all aimed at evaluating:
  • Blood flow in your heart
  • Your blood pressure
  • The rate and rhythm of your heartbeat
  • The strength of the electrical signals regulating your heartbeat

What are they used for?

Stress tests are primarily employed to identify the underlying cause of symptoms that may indicate a heart issue. These tests aid in diagnosing various heart conditions, such as:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Angina
  • Arrhythmia
  • Heart failure
  • Heart valve diseases
  • Cardiomyopathy

Why do I need a stress test?

You may require a stress test if you experience symptoms suggestive of a heart condition, such as:

  • Chest pain or discomfort of unknown origin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat resembling a fluttering sensation in the chest
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Additionally, you might need a stress test if you:

  • Have a heart condition with new or worsening symptoms.
  • Are scheduled for surgery to evaluate if your heart is strong enough for the procedure.
  • Are undergoing treatment for heart disease to assess the effectiveness of interventions, including surgery.
  • Have a heightened risk for heart disease due to factors like family history or conditions like diabetes.
  • Plan to initiate an exercise regimen, as a stress test can determine the appropriate level of activity based on your heart health. (Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any new strenuous exercise routine.)
