Trauma

What Is Trauma ?

Trauma encompasses any distressing occurrence or experience that may affect an individual’s capacity to manage and carry on with daily functions, potentially causing emotional, physical, and psychological damage.

At some stage in their lives, many individuals will encounter a traumatic event, ranging from the sudden loss of a loved one to experiencing a car crash.

Symptoms

Experiencing intrusive thoughts and memories: It’s common for individuals to have recurring thoughts and memories of a traumatic event, particularly when encountering triggers such as certain people, locations, or images that bring the event back to mind.

Increased vigilance: Feeling more alert and watchful regarding your environment post-trauma is a natural reaction.

Heightened arousal: Along with being more vigilant, you may also find yourself feeling more anxious and on edge after a traumatic event. This heightened state of arousal is part of your body’s defense system.

Sense of vulnerability: The belief in the world as a fundamentally safe and secure environment can be profoundly disrupted by trauma. As a result, it’s not uncommon to perceive danger or threats in various situations or places where you once felt safe.

Treatment

If you’ve been through a traumatic experience, seeking support from a therapist can be beneficial. Consider reaching out to your doctor or a trusted friend or family member for recommendations. Additionally, there are online resources, such as those offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which can assist you in finding mental health professionals in your area.

A therapist can offer guidance and help you gain a better understanding of the symptoms you’re encountering as a result of the trauma. Treatment approaches will vary based on your specific symptoms. They may include psychotherapy, medication, self-care practices, or a combination of these methods. The focus of treatment often involves helping individuals process their emotional responses to the trauma while addressing any associated mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD.
